India Maruti Suzuki factory to reopen following violent clashes

  • The Maruti Suzuki plant in India's Haryana state is set to reopen on August 21, a month after violent clashes killed a company official and injured 85.

Police arrested more than 90 people after the violence.

The violence at the Manesar plant was triggered by months of difficult labor relations and grievances over pay and contracts.

The company employs more than 2,000 people and produces more than 1,000 of Maruti's top-selling cars every day, making up nearly a third of its annual production.

Maruti Suzuki, a joint venture between Maruti and Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation, boasts a 50 percent share of India's lucrative car market.
