IAG eyes stake in combined U.S. airline

  • International Airlines Group (IAG) has signed a non-disclosure agreement with American Airlines, with a view to take a small stake in the U.S. carrier, which is itself in talks over a potential merger with U.S. Airways Group.

"We have signed a non-disclosure agreement with American," an IAG spokeswoman said on Sunday without disclosing the size of the stake it would take in American. "We are interested in looking at taking a possible stake in a restructured American if they welcome it and if it will bring benefit to our shareholders."

On Friday, American Airlines parent company AMR and U.S. Airways said they had signed a non-disclosure agreement as they consider a potential merger that would create a carrier to rival United Continental Holdings.
