Greece PM to miss EU summit following surgery
June 25 , 2012
Greece's new Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will miss this week's EU summit as he recovers from eye surgery, according to a government spokesman.
Samaras underwent routine surgery on Saturday for a damaged retina.
He was sworn in as prime minister last Wednesday and heads a three-party pro-austerity coalition.
The Greek reform program was expected to top the agenda of the two-day EU summit in Brussels that begins this Thursday.
The new government is aiming to reduce requirements imposed by other EU nations and the International Monetary Fund, including an extension to a deadline for it to reduce its budget deficit by at least two years, to 2016.
