Greece debt: EU leaders secure bailout deal after marathon talks
July 13 , 2015
EU leaders have offered a $96 billion bailout to Greece after the Alexis Tsipras government agreed to carry out key economic reforms that will be closely monitored by international lenders.
The deal means Greece won’t have to exit the euro, at least in the immediate future.
The breakthrough came after marathon talks that were often volatile and tested the skills and patience of European leaders and diplomats.
However, by agreeing to some very difficult bailout terms, Greek prime minister Tsipras could face a political backlash at home.
