German Chancellor rules out further debt relief for Greece
February 1 , 2015
Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has ruled out further cancellation of Greece’s debt. However, she wants Greece to remain in the eurozone.
In an interview, Merkel stated that creditors and banks had already made substantial cuts in the debt.
The far-left Syriza party, which has won Greece’s election, has promised to write off half of the country’s debt.
Meanwhile, the new Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has refused to talk to the three global institutions - the European Central Bank, European Commission and IMF, overseeing the country’s debt.
