Free zone started in Dubai for design and fashion
June 9 , 2013
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum has started a new free zone in Dubai named Dubai Design District. It can be seen as the newest step on part of the emirate’s authorities to make its economy more diverse and lessen the dependence on oil, which has been its primary source of income over the last few decades. This zone will be aiming to develop the fashion, luxury and design related sectors of the emirates. The Dubai Design District will be located in the vicinity of Business Bay Area of Dubai. The Business Bay Area houses the Burj Khalifa, which with a height of 828 m is the highest tower of the world.
The Dubai Media Office has stated that very soon the district will become a complete commercial hub and will be able to cater to a wide range of organizations related to the design industry as well as entities that support such companies and all the major brands. Dubai Media Office is the representative media entity of the government of Dubai. Till now fashion in Dubai has largely been restricted to the high streets and the malls but the design district is going to represent a new opening in that direction.
