Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis may face 'criminal charges'
July 30 , 2015
Yanis Varoufakis, Greece’s former finance minister, who led negotiations with international creditors for months, may face possible criminal charges after revelations that he had a secret plan to set up an alternative currency in case the country left the eurozone.
Efterpi Koutzamani, the country’s top state prosecutor, has ordered parliament to examine the series of complaints against Varoufakis.
Koutzamani has also asked for a magistrate-level inquiry into the possibility of bringing criminal charges against those accused of hacking taxpayer accounts in order to establish a parallel system of payment.
