European Commission opens antitrust probe into Amazon e-book business
June 12 , 2015
The European Commission (EC) has started a formal antitrust probe into the e-book business of internet giant Amazon.
The EC will examine clauses in the company’s contracts which require publishers to inform Amazon about agreements they have with its rival firms.
Amazon is already under the scanner for its low tax rates in Luxembourg.
Margrethe Vestager, the new competition commissioner of the EC, is looking into several major American companies including Google and Apple.
In a statement, she said that it was her duty to ensure that “Amazon's arrangements with publishers are not harmful to consumers.”
