EU ban on Indian mangoes set to be lifted
January 21 , 2015
The European Union’s ban on Indian mango imports is being lifted, according to media reports. The way is cleared for the fruit to be transported to the UK and other member countries.
Mango shipments from India to the EU got suspended in May 2014 when fruit flies were found in the consignments. The European Commission said India’s export system for mangoes had seen “significant improvements" since then.
A committee of the Commission voted on Tuesday, January 20, to lift the ban. But other items from India such as aubergines and a few varieties of squash remain on the restricted list.
