Debut novel sold for nearly $2M

  • A 34-year-old author named Garth Risk Hallberg sold his debut novel, 'City on Fire,' for nearly $2M.

Several publishers bid over $1M and the war was finally won by Knopf after two days.

The debut book drew an advance and there's already a film deal by producer Scott Rudin, who apparently read the 900-page-long book overnight and optioned it immediately.

The plot of 'City on Fire' is about a mystery in NYC. Hallberg's agent mentioned that the story revolves around "what exactly is going on behind the locked steel doors of a derelict townhouse in the East Village, and what might it have to do with the shooting in Central Park in the novel's opening act."
