Debt crisis: Greek MPs back PM's referendum plan

  • Greece’s parliament has backed prime minister Alexis Tsipras’s plan for a July 5 referendum on the lenders’ bailout plan.

Tsipras has called upon voters to reject the package.

Eurozone members have criticized the referendum plan and rejected Greece’s request to extend the bailout program beyond June 30, amid growing concerns over the possibility of a Greek exit from the EU.

In the absence of a bailout agreement, time has practically run out for Greece, which has to make a repayment of €1.6 billion to the IMF by June 30.
