China's exports down 6.2% in April; trade surplus increases

  • China’s exports dropped 6.2% in April in yuan terms compared to a year ago instead of the expected rise of around 1.5%, the country’s trade figures reveal.

    Imports have also fallen by over 16% (in yuan terms) compared to a 12% fall forecast.

    Effectively, China’s trade surplus has increased from 18.6 billion yuan in March to 210.2 billion yuan in April.

    In American dollar terms, exports dropped 6.4% while China’s imports were down 16.2%.
