China Singles' Day: Shoppers spend $9.3bn in 12 hours

Shoppers in China splurged more than $9 billion in the first 12 hours of the Singles’ Day sales, exceeding last year’s total figure for what has been billed as the world’s biggest online shopping day.
The total gross merchandise volume equaled the 2014 figure of $9.3 billion a little after midday, according to Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba said.
Reports indicate that by 10pm local time, Chinese shoppers had spent about $13 billion.
