Canada teaches alcoholics to brew beer

A Vancouver group has come up with another harm reduction strategy, which teaches hardened alcoholics how to brew their own beer.
According to the Portland Hotel Society, the aim is to make alcoholics steer away from dangerous substances. "Obviously, we'd rather they didn't drink," the group's director said. "But if they do, we'd rather they didn't drink hand sanitizer."
About 90 drinkers in the program attend weekly meetings and learn to make wine and beer under supervision.
"It's like a kind of gun amnesty," the director said. "OK, if you're desperate, bring us that, and drink this instead." He mentioned that the program has given its members a sense of pride and they have also started to see positive effects that come from healthier living.
