Barclays names Antony Jenkins as new chief executive
August 31 , 2012
Barclays named Antony Jenkins as its new chief executive on Thursday.
The appointment follows the resignation of former chief executive Bob Diamond following a Libor interest rate-fixing scandal that resulted in a $450 million fine by UK and U.S. regulators.
Jenkins currently heads Barclays Retail and Business Banking and has been part of the group's executive committee since 2009.
The announcement was made a day after Barclays revealed the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) had launched a probe into the British bank.
Barclays said the SFO was looking into payments made between the bank and Qatar Holding LLC, part of sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority.
The inquiry relates to incidents in 2008, when Barclays was raising capital from Middle East investors during the banking crisis.
