Australia: Court overturns approval for Indian firm's giant coal mine
August 5 , 2015
A court in Australia has overturned the approval for Indian firm Adani’s Queensland coal mine, which has raised environmental concerns.
The giant Carmichael mine, which was approved by the Australian government in 2014, would have become one of the biggest coal mines in the world.
The court said that the environment ministry had ignored advice about the threat it posed to vulnerable animal species. The court’s ruling means the mine needs fresh approval before it is able to legally operate.
