Arrests made after riot at India Maruti plant
July 20 , 2012
Around 90 people have been arrested following violent clashes between employees and managers at a Maruti Suzuki factory near the Indian capital New Delhi.
A senior factory worker died and more than 85 were injured, including two Japanese nationals, during the riot at the Manesar plant on Wednesday evening.
Maruti, India's biggest car manufacturer, has since halted production at the factory in the northern state of Haryana.
An argument between a factory worker and a supervisor is believed to have triggered the violence.
Grievances over wages and employee contracts are also seen to be an underlying issue.
Workers reportedly ransacked offices and set fires at the height of the violence.
The plant employs some 2,000 people and produces more than 1,000 of Maruti's cars every day, making up nearly a third of its annual production.
