Alex Salmond battles for Scotland's right to keep sterling
August 8 , 2014
Alex Salmond, Scotland’s first minister, has indicated that if it became independent, Scotland would use the sterling as its currency. “It’s our pound and we're keeping it,” he said.
Salmond maintained that the British government had no right to stop an independent Scotland from using the sterling.
He claimed that sharing the sterling was in Britain’s interests as well, since the UK and Scottish economies had considerable cross-border trade and were closely integrated.
