Situated in the eastern side of the Mountain Rhodope, Kardzhali is the capital of the Province Kardzhali. The town is located at a distance of 260km southeast of Sofia. Near the town lies the Kardzhali Dam and the Studen Kladenets Dam.

The town has derived its name from the Ottoman army Kardzha Ali. Until 17th century, the country was known as " Zerkovo". The city developed due to its position on the important trade roads. Kardzhali and its neighboring areas became part of the Eastern Rumelia. At the time of the first Balkan war, the rule of the Ottoman came to an end.

This city of Bulgaria houses a number of ethnic groups. Presently, this Bulgarian city has the highest proportion of Turks along with Romas, Bulgarins.

The economy of the city is mainly based on the retail trade. It is the major center for tobacco processing and has become an important location for industries related to machine building and metallurgy.

The city is home to many tourist attractions of Bulgaria. The Perperikon Thracian town is situated very near to the city attracting a number of visitors. In southern part of Bulgaria, the Kardzhali Museum of History is a very popular museum of the country. Apart from these, the other important places of interest in Kardzhali are:

  • Monastery of John, the Precursor
  • Kardzhali Pyramids
The Kardzhali Pyramids are the white pillars which have been eroded out and have formed small pyramids. There are also two dams situated very near to the city.
