Garni Map

Garni has become one of the most visited cities of Armenia because of the two thousand years old Temple of the Sun . The location of the temple attracts most of its visitors. The Garni Temple is situated on the edge of a 300 meters deep gorge. It is made of basalt, a kind of volcanic rock which adds an extra edge to the ancient look of the temple. The temple is the symbol of the Armenian culture.

Garni Temple was first built in BC 2166 as a pagan centre of worship but was destroyed after the Arab conquest. After centuries the temple was restored and expanded as the fortress town Garni. In 1969 a group of Armenian engineers with the help of the government started reconstructing it and by 1975 the reassembling was done and the ancient temple of Garni was finally restored.
