Ashtarak Map

Located on the Kasagh river gorge, Ashtarak is the industrial city in Armenia and the administrative capital of Aragatsotn province. Ashtarak is situated 20km northwest from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. The city of Ashtarak is situated in a crucial position. The city is dissected by three routes which reach to three of the most important towns of Armenia: Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor. Ashtarak city was established in 1963. According to the population survey in 2001 the total population of the city is nearly 30,000.

Old churches, historical museums and some restaurants, hotels and casino complexes are located all over Ashtarak.

History of Ashtarak
There is a very sad legend regarding the names of the churches located at the edge of the gorge. According to the legend there were three sisters living in Ashtarak and all of the three were in love with a prince named Sargis. All of these sisters committed suicide by throwing themselves from the gorge. After these tragedies Sargis started living alone and three churches appeared on the edge of the gorge and were named after the three sisters' dress color.

Churches in Ashtarak
  • Karmravor: dedicated to "Arakelots", the "Mother of God", the church dates back to the 7th century. The word 'Karmin' means red. It is the most well preserved church among the three.
  • Spitakavor: the church was built during the 14th century. The name has derived from the word 'spitak' which means white.
  • Tsiranavor: the church was established during the 5th century.
  • St. Marine: it is the largest church of Ashtarak . The church with a cross shaped building and octagonal tambour was built in 1281 at the centre of the city.
One of the most spectacular architectural structures of Ashtarak is the bridge on the river Kasagh. The bridge was build in 1664 featuring three unequal arches holding up the construction.
