English Harbor Map

English Harbor is a peaceful and reminiscent historic district of Antigua. It covers fifteen square miles of Nelson's Dockyard National Park. The English Harbor in Antigua was initially developed as a base for British Navy.
It served as the headquarters of the fleet of the Leeward Islands during the 18th century. Although the dockyard was restored and expanded to a great extent during the 19th century it was then closed in 1889. Today, Nelson's Dockyard is completely renewed and is the only Georgian dockyard in the world. The English Harbor of Antigua is popularly known as a 'hurricane hole'. It is internationally famous as yachting and sailing destination and as a provisioning center.

The climate in English Harbor Antigua is mostly of a tropical marine type with little seasonal variations. The islands of Antigua are considered to be the sunniest among the East Caribbean Islands with constant north easterly trade winds. The humidity level is generally low on these islands.

The small village of English Harbor at present comprises of only a little more than a handful of houses, shops and restaurants. The population density in this area is also quite low. However, there are frequent buses between St. John's and English Harbor which are useful to explore Nelson's Dockyard.

All the tourist spots of attraction overlook the English harbor, the closest one being the Clarence House, a house built for the future King William IV. Above the harbor, at Shirley Heights, one can find the partially-restored fortifications of the harbor's colonial observation post. One can reach Shirley Heights via Lookout Trail which is a natural walk from the harbor through woodland of trees. Along the Lookout Trail and near Shirley Heights is Dow's Hill Interpretation Center, where travelers can watch an exciting multimedia presentation on the history of Antigua, staring from its settlement to independence. Another interesting spot is the Fort Berkeley, which provides a mesmerizing view of the harbor. All of these tourist spots draw greater crowds during Sailing Week.
