Where is Maine?<\/h2>\n

Maine (the 23rd state admitted to the union on March 15, 1820) is located in the northeastern US. It is the northern-most state in the New England area and is located to the east of the Great Lakes. Among the contiguous USA, it is the easternmost state. Maine shares its border with only one US state, which is New Hampshire (to the west). It is the only state in the United States that shares its border with only one state. However, to the northeast and northwest, this state shares its border with New Brunswick and Qu\u00e9bec provinces of Canada respectively. The Atlantic Ocean borders the southeast of Maine.<\/p>\n

What is the Geography of Maine?<\/h2>\n

Maine is spread across a total area of 35,385 sq. mi (91,646 sq. km), making it the 12th smallest state of the US. Out of the total area, the land area is spread across 30,862 sq. mi (80,005 sq. km) and the water area across 4,523 sq. mi (11,724 sq. km). Water bodies occupy 12.8% of the total area.<\/p>\n

Maine is around 320 mi (515 km) long and 190 mi (305.8 km) wide. Its mean elevation is 600 ft (182.9 m) above sea level. While Mount Katahdin is the highest elevation point of the state at 5,276 ft (1,608 m) above sea level, the Atlantic Ocean is the lowest elevation point at 0 ft (0 m).<\/p>\n

The significant mountains in Maine are Mount Katahdin, Sugarloaf Mountain, Old Speck Mountain, Crocker Mountain, Bigelow Mountain, North Brother Mountain, Saddleback Mountain, Mount Abram, The Horn and Mount Redington.<\/p>\n

The second important geographic region is the Eastern New England Uplands. It starts from Canada and stretches to Connecticut. It is 20-50 mi (32-80.5 km) wide, and in the west, the land rises to around 2,000 ft (609.6 m). The Aroostook Plateau is found in the north of the New England Uplands. This plateau is known as good farmland for growing potatoes. Lakes and fast streams are found to the south of the Aroostook Plateau. Through the central part of this geographic region, the Longfellow Mountains are located.<\/p>\n

The third important region is the White Mountains, which covers the northwest part of the state. It is 30 mi (48.3 km) wide in the south and 5 mi (8 km) wide in the north. The highest elevation point in this region is Mount Katahdin. Ten mountains are more than 4,000 ft (1,219.2 m) high, and 97 mountains are more than 3,000 ft (914.4 m) high.<\/p>\n

A humid continental climate is found in Maine that is characterized by warm and humid summers and cold and very snowy winters. The winters get severely cold in the northern and western parts of the state. The coastal areas get slightly milder winters because of the effects of the Atlantic Ocean. The summers too remain cooler in coastal Maine than other parts of the state.<\/p>\n

In July, the daytime highs range within 75-80 \u00b0F (24-27 \u00b0C), and the nighttime lows reach 50s \u00b0F (around 15 \u00b0C). The rainfall level remains evenly distributed around the year. The late-spring and summer months are the driest months while Presque Isle gets around 909 mm (35.8 in) of annual average rainfall, Acadia National Park receives around 1,441 mm (56.7 in).<\/p>\n

Maine gets fewer thunderstorms than other states in the region. It gets around 20-days of storms every year. Tornadoes rarely occur in Maine. The average occurrence of tornadoes is less than four per year. However, this number is increasing.<\/p>\n

What is the Economy of Maine?<\/h3>\n

The economy of Maine is a relatively poor state having the lowest per capita income in the New England region of the US. With the decline of traditional industries such as paper and paper products, Maine\u2019s economy has become more and more dependent upon the service sector. The other major sectors of the state are agriculture, fishing, mining, and forestry.<\/p>\n

While livestock and livestock production contributes around 60% of the total agricultural income, crops contribute just 40%.
