The District of Columbia (commonly called Washington DC), is a federal district and not a state. It is the capital of the United States of America. Washington DC or the District of Columbia should not be confused with Washington (state), located on the US West Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1787, at the time of the adoption of the Constitution of the United States, the area encompassing the current District of Columbia was part of Maryland.
