While the United Kingdom has taken an exit from the European Union, there are several countries that want to be a part of the EU. Turkey, the country straddling both the continents of Europe and Asia, has also applied to attain membership.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0political and economic union of 27 countries\u00a0located in Europe, the EU has been described as an emerging superpower. It has quite a strong influence on international matters. In 2012, the European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n

The members that\u00a0initiated the formation\u00a0of the European Union were Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and West Germany (now Germany). The Union continued to grow as new member states gradually joined. Until now, no member country had left the EU. However, triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty<\/span><\/a>, the United Kingdom became the first country to withdraw from the EU. On January 31, 2020, the UK officially left the EU.<\/p>\n
