Governments around the world are working towards empowering women<\/strong> to participate fully in all spheres of life. Positive steps have been taken in this regard by reserving seats in the parliament as well as providing them better educational and health facilities; but, is it enough? In promoting women\u2019s empowerment it is critical that their financial independence is getting taken care of and this is possible only if they have access to finance. In some countries, 100 percent of the women aged 15 and above have an account at a financial institution; meaning every female in these nations is financially empowered, while in others the situation is so bad that less than two percent of women have access to an account at a financial institution<\/strong>. And, not many countries meet the 100 percent mark.<\/p>\n

According to the World Bank data<\/strong> of 2014, only three nations in the world were able to meet the 100 percent mark. The three Nordic nations of Denmark,\u00a0 Norway<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 and Finland<\/strong> were the nations where 100 percent women, aged 15 and above, had an account at a financial institution. The European nations<\/strong> formed the bulk of those where 90 percent and above women had an account at a financial institution. The only non European nations in this list were\u00a0 Canada<\/span><\/a>, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong,\u00a0 United States<\/span><\/a>, South Korea, Mongolia, and Israel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The South Asian region witnessed just 36.8 percent women having an account at a financial institution. While Sri Lanka<\/strong> commanded a respectable 83.1 percent, Pakistan<\/strong> ranked down the ladder at just 3 percent women having an account at a financial institution. Among the European nations, while\u00a0 Sweden<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, Finland and Norway<\/strong> were at the top,\u00a0 Albania<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> reported a figure of 33.6 percent. But it was better than many African nations where the figure was less than 20 percent. The highest ranked African Nation was South Africa where 68.8 percent of the women had an account at a financial institution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, standing at the bottom of the ladder were nations such as Turkmenistan, Yemen and\u00a0 Niger\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/strong>which reported figures of 1.6 percent, 1.7 percent and 2.5 percent respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
