Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland.

Edinburgh, which is located in the Scottish Lowlands region of Lothian, is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. Edinburgh covers an area of 102 square miles and comprises a population of 507,170 inhabitants, as of 2016. This makes it the second most populous city in Scotland after Glasgow. It is also the seventh most populated city in the United Kingdom.

According to evidence, earliest habitation in Edinburgh dates back to 8500 BC. In the 1st century AD, the region came under the control of the Roman Empire. Edinburgh has been acknowledged as the capital of Scotland since the 15th century.

Today, Edinburgh is home to the parliament of Scotland. Prominent institutions in the city such as the National Library of Scotland, National Museum of Scotland, and the Scottish National Gallery provide valuable insights into the history and culture of Scotland. Edinburgh is also an important center of Education. Situated here is the University of Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport is the busiest airport, while Edinburgh Waverley is the second busiest railway station in Scotland. The bus service within the city and surrounding areas is run by the Lothian Buses.
