Map of Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina

The city of Buenos Aires, popularly referred to as the Paris of South America, is the capital of Argentina. The name Buenos Aires means ‘fair winds,’ or ‘good air.’ But Fair Winds, meaning ‘good weather,’ was the intended meaning by the area’s founders.

Argentina is the second largest country in South America, and Buenos Aires is located along the western shore of the Río de la Plata near the east coast of the country (at a distance of about 150 miles from the Atlantic Ocean). Buenos Aires is one of the most important ports of South America. The city is one of the most visited cities in Latin America and is also known for its high quality of life. It has the highest domestic income levels of the entire continent.

The city of Buenos Aires is believed to have been established by Spanish in the 16th century and was named Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Aire (translated into Our Lady St. Mary of the Good Air). Though we speak of the European establishment of the city, the indigenous people were living there at the time.

Buenos Aires is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich cities known for its warmth and European architecture. It is known for its long avenues and boulevards, numerous restaurants and cafes, the incredible street art, the large parks and gardens, and theaters. The grand Casa Rosada, the colorful La Boca, the iconic Plaza de Mayo, the Obelisk of Buenos Aires, the impressive theater of Teatro Colon, the Japanese Gardens, the National Museum, and the MALBA are among the top tourist attractions of the city.
