Railways provide one of the most convenient, time-saving, and fun-filled mode of travel. While some of the rail journeys pass through scenic surroundings providing the travelers breathtaking views of the majestic mountains, valleys, and green fields, others are nightmarish experiences because of the dangerous terrains. Here, we bring you a few of the most dangerous railway routes in the world.

Chennai-Rameswaram Route, India

Chennai-Rameswaram Route in India is scenic and at the same time frightening. The railways bridge, which is known as the Pamban Bridge, connects mainland India with the town of Rameshwaram. The bridge was inaugurated in 1914 and remained the longest sea bridge in India till it was overtaken by the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 2010. However, at times, traveling on the bridge can be a harrowing experience for train-passengers. As the bridge passes over the ocean, strong tides can often flood the tracks. To steer passengers to safety, trains usually move at very slow speeds at the time of whirlwinds.

Argo Gede Train Railroad, Indonesia

Argo Gede Train Railroad connects the cities of Jakarta and Bandung in Indonesia. Traveling in the train is heavenly as you would come across picturesque views of the green fields and valley, but it is equally scary. The pylon trestle bridge is at a height of 200 feet and would make you nervous if you peep through the windows into the depths of the valley. So, if you are afraid of heights do not look down.

Aso Minami Route, Japan

The Aso Minami Route in Japan is among the most intimidating rail routes in the world. Unlike most of the train routes which pass through scenic surroundings, the Aso Minami Route transverses through the most active volcanic region of Japan. On the way, travelers can witness the lava burnt forests unaware about when the next volcanic eruption would take place.

Kuranda Scenic Railroad, Australia

You can call it scenic or frightening because Kuranda Scenic Railroad is both. Traversing through the Barron Gorge National Park, the rail route provides travelers with enchanting views of the wooded areas and its flora & fauna and the majestic waterfalls. But at one section on its way, the train gets too close to a waterfall which floods the track with water. Add to this the tunnels, sharp corners, and cliffs in close proximity to the train, the Kuranda Scenic Railroad is one great ride.

Devil’s Nose Train, Ecuador

The Devil’s Nose Train rail route in Ecuador is frighteningly high. Running among the mountains, the rail route is really scary as it is situated at a height of 9000 feet above sea level. So, a peep down from the window can really make you nervous. Nevertheless, this ride would definitely appeal to the thrill seekers who would be left mesmerized by the country’s majestic mountains and scenic beauty.

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Colorado, USA

Though the Georgetown Loop Railroad is an amazing train ride, but it is also scary. Located in the US state of Colorado, this rail route was built in the 19th century to aid access to silver mines. The scary part is when the train crosses the section known as the Devil’s Gate. This is a 100 feet high section and the trains slow down to avoid putting a strain on the bridge.
