By definition, a landlocked country is surrounded by other countries with no direct access to sea or ocean. Here, it is to be noted that some of these countries border Caspian Sea, but the sea itself is a landlocked water body. This lack of access to a coastline has been an advantage and a disadvantage. Being away from the sea or ocean has kept these countries safe from natural calamities originating from water such as tsunamis, hurricanes and cyclones; military attacks from the sea or ocean.

However, being landlocked has also meant that these countries have had to be dependent on their neighbors for transit of people or goods through the land route. Another fallout has been the rise in the cost of goods due to increased cost of logistics and duties.
