There are many islands in Italy. Proximity with seas, rivers and lakes have led to the emergence of many islands all over Italy. The islands in the Mediterranean sea are all part of Italy.

Names of some of the islands in the Mediterranean sea are given below:

Aeolian Islands : These islands in Italy are the result of volcanic eruptions in the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north of Sicily. The largest island in this archipelago is the Lipari Island. Other islands in this archipelago are Salina, Filicudi, Vulcano, Stromboli, Panarea and Alicudi.




Aegadian Islands : These are a group of Italian islands having a mountainous terrain. This group of island is even situated in the Mediterranean sea. Favignana is the largest island in this group. The other islands in this group are the Marettimo and Levanzo.


Asinara Island : This Italian island is located on the northwest tip of Sardinia. The island lacks vegetation and has a very sparse population. This Italian island has been recently converted into a wild life and marine life preserve.

The most striking animal here is the albino Donkey and the name of the island means inhabited by Donkey.

There are many islands apart from the three mentioned above. To name a few islands, Capri, Ferdinandea, Bergeggi, flegrean Islands under this archipelago there are four more islands. Maddalena Archipelago, under this there is the Caprera, Santa Maria, Spargi, La Maddalena.


Apart from the islands in the sea, there are islands in lakes and rivers as well. Name of some Islands in the lakes are Lago Maggiore, Lago di Como, Lago d’Orta, Lago di Garda.

Some islands in the Tiber river is the Isola Tierina, this is a boat shaped island.

Overall, Italy is a place where one can find a part of land in the water bodies. Islands in Italy have attracted tourists from far and wide and have added to the increasing revenue in the tourist industry.


Ischia Island

Ischia Island is the largest of the Phlegrean Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea which is formed by volcanic eruptions. The island is also famous for its thermal spa resorts.
