Okapi Wildlife Reserve

The Okapi Wildlife Reserve in Zaire covers nearly one-fifth of the Ituri forest which is located in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The wildlife reserve and the forest is a part of the Congo river basin, which is the largest drainage systems in Africa. The reserve is inhabited by a huge number of endangered species of primates and birds. Nearly 5,000 of the rare species of mammal, Okapi can be found in the wilds of the reserve. It is a favorite destination among the wildlife enthusiasts.

Just one year after receiving the status of World Heritage, Okapi Wildlife Reserve was included on the list of World Heritage in Danger due to the armed conflict in early 1997 that spread out to the eastern parts of the country. The officials take special care to protect the wild animals from poaching and other natural calamities. Apart from the rich wildlife, the reserve is also adorned by breathtaking scenic beauty and has waterfalls on the Ituri and Epulu rivers. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve in Democratic Republic of Congo is also famous for its cultural treasures. The reserve is populated by traditional nomadic tribes like the Mbuti and Efe pygmy hunters.
