Zaire Rivers and lakes are considered as one of the most popular tourist spots in the country. Zaire or the Democratic Republic of Congo has a number of lakes situated in different places throughout the country.

The prime river in Zaire is called the Zaire River or Congo River. This river is the longest in the central-western Africa and the second longest in the entire African continent. The Zaire River and the other rivers in Zaire flow through the famous African Rain Forest.

The Zaire River has an historic value. It is the same river that was mentioned in "Heart of Darkness", the famous novel of Joseph Conrad. The surrounding rain forest is famous as the land of Pygmies, cannibals and dreadful diseases like plague. The river is quiet near its origin, the south of Lake Tanganyika. As the river enters the 75 mile long canyon known as "Gates of Hell", it spreads and picks up speed.

There are nineteen lakes in Zaire scattered all over the country. Some of the most important lakes of Zaire are Mweru, Pool Malebo, Zimbambo, Tanganyika, Kivu, Edward and Kabamba. Tanganyika is the third largest lake in the world by volume. It covers Burundi, Zambia and Tanzania as well except Zaire. Mweru is another important river of the country. The oldest stone tools used by the primitive men are found in the banks of River Kivu.

These lakes and rivers are the major sources of water supply of the entire country and are mostly used for cultivation.
