Zaire People



Zaire People can be divided into various ethnic groups. More than 200 African ethnic groups inhabit the country. The majority of the ethnic groups are the Bantu.

The various languages spoken by the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are Kingwana, French, Kikongo, Lingala, Swahili and Tshiluba. One of the main occupation of the people are agriculture which accounts for 75%, then comes the industries which employs 13% of the population and other services are 12%. In 1992, the population of Zaire was approximated recorded to be 39.1 million.

The total Labor force of the region is 15 million out of which 25% of them are wage earners. As per the estimation of 1990, 72 % of the total population are literate which constitutes of 84 % male and 61% female. People in Zaire follow different religions; among the total population 50 % are Roman Catholics, 20 % are Protestants, 10 % are Kimbanguist, 10 % Muslim and the remaining 10 % comprises of other syncretic sects and traditional beliefs.
