The Congo River is the main river of the country and all the other rivers and lakes drain into it. Zaire has large stretches of tropical forests which cover most of the area and extends towards the Atlantic area. The central river basin of Zaire is enclosed by plateaus which lead to the Savannas in the south and southwestern direction. In the eastern most part of Zaire, glaciated mountains are found.
