Zaire Land and People reflect the rich and diverse culture of the land. The Democratic Republic of Congo was formerly known as Zaire and its capital city is Kinhasa. It covers an area of 2,344,885 sq. km. of land.
The major geographic regions of the country include eastern highlands, central Congo Basin and uplands north and south of basin. The core region lies in the central Congo Basin, which has a big depression having an average elevation of nearly forty-four meters. It comprises of about one-third of the country.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has wide variety of flora and fauna. Some of the wild life reserves which is visited by tourists to see some of the rare species of animals are Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Salonga National Park, Virunga National Park, Okapi Wildlife Reserve and Garamba National Park.
The people of the country can be divided into various ethnic groups. More than 200 African ethnic groups live in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The majority of them belong to the Bantu ethnic group.
