Zaire Health statistics are very similar to the other Central African countries. In 1992, the life expectancy at birth was estimated as fifty-two years of age for men and fifty-six years of age for women. One of the greatest achievements of the public health care system is the marked improvement of the statistics on life expectancy.
In a survey conducted by UN in the early 1990s it was estimated that only 50 percent of the population had access to health care system. Officially, the country is divided into several health zones, which cover a population of 100,000 to 150,000. In this health zone there should be one referral hospital, between one and three health centers for reference, and fifteen to twenty-five standard health centers. Five to ten villages in an area has a standard health center which offers basic preventive and simple curative services and it should have at least one certified nurse. The severe medical cases are referred to the reference health centers and referral hospital of the health zones.
In the rural areas the maximum health care system in the country is provided by various religious organizations like the Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Kimbanguist churches, and several other international relief organizations.
