Geography of Zaire encompasses mountains, plateaus and a number of river basins. Located in the west central part of Saharan Africa, Zaire is bordered by Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Lake Tanganyika, Zambia, Angola and Burundi. The Equator divides the country into two halves.
The position of the Equator drastically influences the country's climate and Zaire receives high percentage of precipitation and thunderstorms. This has resulted in the growth of dense forests in the central river basin of the country. The river basin is enclosed by plateaus, which continue and mingle with the Savana grasslands in the south and southwestern part of the country.
