Marib Dam was a proof of the splendid and well-planned architecture of Yemen. This dam was also mentioned in ancient inscriptions. Marib Dam is supposed to be built during 7th century. It was built by Sumhu Alay Yanuf, the then ruler and Yatha - Amar Bayyin, his son.
In later years, the Marib Dam in Yemen was maintained by later generations of rulers. In the hands of the rulers of Himyar, the dam was not properly maintained due to lack of efficient engineers. Himyars tried to maintain the dam well but they could not cope up with the techniques adopted by the Sabaeans.
Marib Dam was once repaired in 450 AD and for a second time in 542 AD. For a third time, the dam broke during 570 AD. But this time it was not repaired. The decline of the dam resulted in the deplorable condition of the civilization of Marib.
Agricultural activities in Marib city were highly dependent on the Marib Dam. The estimated measurement of the dam was about 5,000 feet in length and 100 feet in height. From the lake formed along with the dam, water was sent to the areas of cultivation through various canals.
