The Yemen modern history can be traced back to the year 1962. It was during this year that the Zaidyis in the north were dethroned by a military action from Egypt. The people of Yemen also started their revolution for a free nation. This instigated a civil war between the royalists and revolutionists.
This civil war in Yemen lasted for about 8 years, from 1962 to 1969. During this war the royalists were backed by King Saud of Saudi Arabia and King Hussein of Jordan. On the other hand, the revolutionists were supported by USSR and Egypt's Nasser. In the middle of the year 1969, the revolutionists succeeded in their mission by defeating the royalists.
As soon as the Civil War in the north got over, people in the south of Yemen started their protest against the Britishers. The southern region of Yemen was already a British colony since 1839. In 1967 the Nationalist Liberation Front (NLF) opposed the British rule under a new party named People's Republic of Southern Yemen.
The turning point of the modern history of Yemen came in 1979, when Yemen became the first Marxist nation in the whole Arab world. But the most significant event in the Yemen modern history came in the year 1990. It was during this year that this Middle East nation was declared as the Republic of Yemen.
