Legislature of Yemen

Legislature of Yemen is basically the Assembly of Representatives, Majlis al-Nuwaab and this Assembly comprises around 301 members. They are elected for a term of 6 years in the single seat constituencies.

The bicameral legislature of Yemen actually constitutes the upper house that is also known as the Consultative Council or Shura Council and the House of Representatives. Shura Council on the other hand, has 111 seats that are appointed by the president and the House of Representatives constitutes 301 members who get elected by the popular vote. Right to vote is guaranteed at the age of 18.

In 1994, Yemen constitution underwent certain alterations and it eliminated the presidential council. This amendment also established the fact that the President is elected to his office by means of popular votes. In fact, two candidates having maximum potentialities are selected by the legislature to contest for the post of President in Yemen.

A member of the legislature of Yemen basically represents the entire nation and safeguards the public interest. On the other hand, the meetings of the legislature need an assemblage of minimum half the members and here decisions are taken by the absolute majority of the members. Moreover, the Yemen legislature issues by-laws of its own and also determines the procedures of the working committees.
