Yemen Flora and Fauna depend on the topography and climate of the place. Yemen is mostly a desert land and the scarce rainfall does not allow the growth of much vegetation. The plants, which are found in the arid regions, are of cactus type but those in the highlands are different. The rugged mountains, the sea coast region, mountain slopes all feature different fauna reserve.
An important plant of Yemen is Khat plant. The leaves of this plant, when chewed in excess, cause the consumer to enter a state of paranoia and even hallucination. In lower doses, the effect is similar to that of consuming coffee. The hallucination is caused due to presence of the chemicals, Cathine and Cathinone. The leaves are locally known by various names, such as qat, chat, tschat, gat, tohai, and mirraa.
Other important plants in Yemen include wild elder, Alpine roses, basil, balsam, and Judas tree. These are either herbs or flowering plants of commercial importance. The desert climate encourages the fauna variety to be focused on various types of millipedes and scorpions to dominate the land of Yemen, though there are not much varieties of snake. Yemen is home to baboons, leopard, gazelle and mountain hare. These animals inhabit the more densely vegetated land areas of Yemen. The Yemen Flora and fauna account life in the reserve areas.
