Souks (markets) are the finest destinations that offer the tourists a beautiful experience of shopping in Yemen. One can go out for shopping in Yemen from Sunday to Thursday. The markets there remain open from 8 in the morning to 9 at night. In between they take a lunch break of 3 hours from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Though Yemen is not a shopper's paradise, one can enjoy shopping in the Yemen markets that provide local artifacts, crafts, leather goods, scarves woven with golden thread, ceramics, jambia (daggers), foutah (national costume), candlesticks, amber beads, brightly colored cushions, and many more.
Gold and silver wares are found at Taizz and Sanaa. One must check out the exquisitely designed daggers, also known as Jambiyas. One should have the bargaining power because the sellers quote very high prices. The items made out of the precious metals or exclusive rhinoceros horns are little expensive.
Other items on sale in Yemen shops are perfumes, colored mats, spices, shark's teeth and bukhur incense with charcoal and pottery containers to burn them. Before going for shopping in Yemen, tourists must remember that the markets in this Middle East country do not offer currency exchange facility nor do they provide any credit card facility.
