Veterans Stadium was a multi-sports stadium located at 3501 South Broad Street in South Philadelphia of Pennsylvania. The stadium was the home ground for Philadelphia Phillies , a baseball team and the Philadelphia Eagles , the football team. Construction of the Veterans Stadium was started in 1967. The stadium was inaugurated in 1971. Since then, the stadium has regularly hosted various baseball and football events till 2003. The Veterans Stadium was considered to be one of the largest stadiums, where National Football League matches were held. However, as a baseball field, the stadium was highly criticized. As a multi-sports stadium, the Veterans Stadium featured rollaway seats for converting football field into baseball field.
Veterans Stadium , owned by City of Philadelphia , was designed by Hugh Stubbins and Associates as a part of a sports complex. Department of Recreation was the operator of the stadium. The Veterans Stadium had a capacity of 62,306 spectators for baseball events and that of 65,386 for football matches. The seating arrangement was done in seven levels. The playing surface in the Veterans Stadium was covered by AstroTurf till 2000. In 2001, NeXturf replaced AstroTurf for the covering of the playfield. The Veterans Stadium was closed down in 2003. The Phillies and the Eagles moved to the new stadium at the Citizens Bank Park in 2004, when the Veterans Stadium was demolished.
