United States Ambassador to Libya Killed in Rocket Attack
The United States ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens and three other embassy staff were killed in a rocket attack that targeted his car in the city of Benghazi in Libya. According to officials, the American ambassador and the three staff members were killed when gunmen fired rockets at them.

The US ambassador was being escorted to a safer venue after protesters attacked the US Consulate in Benghazi in protest on a US film that they considered offensive to Islam. The US Embassy has sent a military plane to transport the bodies to Tripoli and fly them back to the United States.

Libyan Deputy Prime Minister, Mustafa Abushagur confirmed that the ambassador had been killed. He stated that Stevens was a friend of Libya and he is shocked at the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. He condemned the barbaric acts and said that it is an attack on America, Libya and free people everywhere.

Stevens was the American ambassador to the Libyan rebel movement that overthrew Dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year. He was among the first American diplomats sent to Libya in 2007 when the US resumed ties with the Gadhafi regime.
