At least six security personnel were killed in Lahore and eight members of Sri Lanka's cricket team hurt in the attack by gunmen near Gaddafi Stadium.

The Sri Lankan squad was on its way to Gaddafi Stadium for the third day of the second test match against Pakistan at around 9 a.m. local time when the bus in which the players where travelling came under attack.

According to the police 12 gunmen opened fire on the convoy. Up to eight players, one coach and 10 security staff were reported hurt in the attack, although most injuries were said to be minor.

The injured players include Tharanga Paranavitana and Thilan Samaraweera who suffered gunshot wounds. Four more players -- team captain Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Thilin Thushara -- and assistant coach Paul Fabrece were reportedly hurt by glass shrapnel.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka's cricketers and officials have been airlifted from the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore by a Pakistan airforce helicopter to facilitate their return to Colombo at the earliest.
