North Korea claimed that it has successfully conducted an underground nuclear test on Monday. According to North Korea's official news agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test was a success. There was no radiation leak.

The test was carried out at Hwadaeri near Kilju city at 10:36 a.m. (1:36 a.m. GMT). South Korea's state intelligence agency detected a 3.58 magnitude seismic tremor in North Hamgyong Province in the northeast of the state. The U.S. Geological Survey Web Site recorded a light 4.2-magnitude earthquake in North Korea at 10:35 a.m about 240 miles northeast of Pyingyang.

According to South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, it brought "a severe situation that threatens stability on the Korean Peninsula and in northeast Asia." The tests have sparked off condemnation on a global level. South Korea would react sternly to this step taken by North Korea. The United States referred to the test as a "provocative act".
