Power Failure In India - Northern and the Eastern Grids Collapse Half of India has gone powerless, with the collapse of both northern and eastern power-grids in the country. This comes after the first collapse of northern grid on Monday July 30th.

The PowerGrid Corporation of India, which manages the electricity supply in India has divided the National Grid into five regions - Northern Region (NR), Southern Region (SR), Eastern Region (ER), Western Region (WR) and North-East Region (NER).

The failure had been the worst in years, and has exposed the condition of the power sector in the country. More than 600 trains have been affected and the metro rails at Delhi, Howrah, Asansol and Sealdah have been stopped because of the breakdown.

The power stations supplying power to North, North-East and East have been shutdown, it would take a day to get back to the normal situation. The thermal plants would take more time than the hydro power stations to resume normal functioning and hence will be started after them.

The states affected by the Eastern Grid include Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunanchal Pradesh, Sikkim and Tripura and the states affected by the Northern Grid are Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and the UT of Chandigarh.
