Earthquake Strikes Western Iran, kills 50
In the wee hours of Friday Morning, Iran woke up to another deadly earthquake that has already claimed 50 lives and has injured more than 800 people (Source: www.khaleejitimes.com). About 200 villages have suffered 40 to 100 percent damage. The earthquake struck in between the industrial towns of Dorud and Borujered in the Lorestan Province of Western Iran. The epicenter of the quake is estimated to be at 32.86°N and 48.30°E. The electricity lines have suffered maximum damage and led to complete blackout in Dorud City. Although it's too early to estimate the damage, but the damage has been extensive as the region lies in the hilly terrain.
The National Seismological Institute (Iran) has confirmed that the tremor of 6.0 Richter Scale struck at 4:47 am (local time) [0117 GMT]. The earthquake was preceded by two other tremors with magnitude 4.7 and 5.1. The tremor was felt as far away as Hamedan in the province of the same name to the north. Earlier this week, on 25 March 2006, earthquake measuring 6.0 shook the sparsely populated region of South Iran, killing one person in a landslide and damaging houses in the mountainous Kouhshab region. Iran is an earthquake-prone area. The worst quake in recent times hit Bam in the south of the country in December 2003 killing 31,000 people.
