2003 Southeast Asian Games was held in the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Games was officially inaugurated by Vietnamese Prime Minister, Phan Van Khai. Playing host to the largest sports event of the region, Vietnam, also participated in the competition.
The torch of the22nd Southeast Asian Games, 2003, was lit by Nguyen Thuy Hien. 11 Asian countries participated in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games. The mascot of the Southeast Asian Games, 2003, was Trau Vang, the golden water buffalo. It was selected by artist Nguyen Thai Hung of Vietnam.
A bird from the legends of Vietnam, the Chim Lac, inspired artist Nguyen Chi Long, while designing the logo for the 2003 Southeast Asian Games. The Southeast Asian Sports Federation is symbolized by the 10 circles that intersect one another. The hymn for Southeast Asian Games, 2003, 'For the World of Tomorrow', was composed by Nguyen Quang Vinh.
The events organized in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games included various sports and games like athletics, archery, boxing, rowing, pencak silat, taekwondo, judo, football, gymnastics, chess, etc. The host country, Vietnam, achieved the highest number of medals in 2003 Southeast Asian Games and became the top ranking team in the medal tally chart with 158 gold, 97 silver and 91 bronze medals.
